يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ وَلَا تُبْطِلُوا أَعْمَالَكُمْ ﴿۳۳﴾ إِنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَصَدُّوا عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ مَاتُوا وَهُمْ كُفَّارٌ فَلَنْ يَغْفِرَ اللَّهُ لَهُمْ ﴿۳۴﴾ فَلَا تَهِنُوا وَتَدْعُوا إِلَى السَّلْمِ وَأَنْتُمُ الْأَعْلَوْنَ وَاللَّهُ مَعَكُمْ وَلَنْ يَتِرَكُمْ أَعْمَالَكُمْ ﴿۳۵﴾
﴾33﴿ Yaaa ayyuhal lazeena aamanoo atee'ul laaha wa atee'ur Rasoola wa laa tubtilooo a'maalakum
﴾34﴿ Innal lazeena kafaroo wa saddoo 'an sabeelil laahi summa maatoo wa hum kuffaarun falany yaghfirallaahu lahum
﴾35﴿ Falaa tahinoo wa tad'ooo ilas salmi wa antumul a'lawna wallaahu ma'akum wa lany yatirakum a'maalakum
﴾33﴿ O believers, obey Allah and obey the Messenger, and do not nullify your deeds (by opposing them)
﴾34﴿ Surely, those who disbelieved and hindered others from the path of Allah, then died while they were disbelievers—Allah will never forgive them
﴾35﴿ So do not weaken and do not call for peace (out of weakness) while you are superior, and Allah is with you, and He will never diminish the reward of your deeds
[33] After mentioning the conditions of the hypocrites, this verse now warns the believers against adopting the traits of the hypocrites, and encourages obedience to Allah the Exalted and His Messenger.
(وَلَا تُبْطِلُوا أَعْمَالَكُمْ) — this means a warning against the traits of the hypocrites that were previously mentioned, as those traits lead to the nullification of deeds.
This statement is general and includes every form of invalidation of deeds, whether it be through disobedience to Allah and His Messenger, apostasy, or through associating partners with Allah or disbelief.
[34] After addressing the believers, this verse contains a warning directed at the disbelievers.
Previously, in verse 32, the subject was the hostile opposers (those who opposed with enmity), but this verse refers to the ignorant disbelievers.
[35] After mentioning the vileness of the disbelievers, this verse encourages the believers to strive in jihad and warns them against becoming weak-hearted.
(وَتَدْعُوا إِلَى السَّلْمِ) — this does not contradict verse 61 of Surah Al-Anfal, because there a condition is stated: when the disbelievers seek peace, then making peace is allowed. But here, the meaning is that you should not initiate the desire for peace from the beginning. That’s why the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah occurred at the request of the disbelievers.
(وَأَنْتُمُ الْأَعْلَوْنَ) — being "higher" here refers to honor and status in the sight of Allah the Exalted, meaning: your status is elevated before Allah, so do not act in a lowly manner. Alternatively, it may refer to superiority in evidence and argument.
(وَاللَّهُ مَعَكُمْ) — this means Allah is with you in support and help, and this meaning is clear and not figurative. Thus, it becomes evident that ma‘iyyah (Allah’s being "with") is among the mutashabihat (ambiguous attributes), as mentioned by Imam Bukhari and other early scholars.
