ا خَيْرَ فِي كَثِيرٍ مِنْ نَجْوَاهُمْ إِلَّا مَنْ أَمَرَ بِصَدَقَةٍ أَوْ مَعْرُوفٍ أَوْ إِصْلَاحٍ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ وَمَنْ يَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ ابْتِغَاءَ مَرْضَاتِ اللَّهِ فَسَوْفَ نُؤْتِيهِ أَجْرًا عَظِيمًا ﴿۱۱۴﴾ وَمَنْ يُشَاقِقِ الرَّسُولَ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُ الْهُدَى وَيَتَّبِعْ غَيْرَ سَبِيلِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ نُوَلِّهِ مَا تَوَلَّى وَنُصْلِهِ جَهَنَّمَ وَسَاءَتْ مَصِيرًا ﴿۱۱۵﴾ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَغْفِرُ أَنْ يُشْرَكَ بِهِ وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَلِكَ لِمَنْ يَشَاءُ وَمَنْ يُشْرِكْ بِاللَّهِ فَقَدْ ضَلَّ ضَلَالًا بَعِيدًا ﴿۱۱۶﴾ إِنْ يَدْعُونَ مِنْ دُونِهِ إِلَّا إِنَاثًا وَإِنْ يَدْعُونَ إِلَّا شَيْطَانًا مَرِيدًا ﴿۱۱۷﴾
﴾114﴿ Laa khaira fee kaseerim min najwaahum illaa man amara bisadaqatin aw ma'roofin aw islaahim bainan naas; wa mai yaf'al zaalikab tighaaa'a mardaatil laahi fa sawfa nu'teehi ajran 'azeemaa
﴾115﴿ Wa mai yushaaqiqir Rasoola mim ba'di maa tabaiyana lahul hudaa wa yattabi' ghaira sabeelil mu'mineena nuwallihee ma tawallaa wa nuslihee Jahannama wa saaa'at maseeraa
﴾116﴿ Innal laaha laa yaghfiru ai yushraka bihee wayaghfiru maa doona zaalika limai yashaaa'; wa mai yushrik billaahi faqad dalla dalaalam ba'eedaa
﴾117﴿ Iny yad'oona min dooniheee illaaa inaasanw wa iny yad'oona illaa Shaitaanam mareedaa
﴾114﴿ And there is no good in most of their consultations, except in the consultation of one who commands giving charity, or doing good, or making peace between people. And whoever does this seeking the pleasure of Allah, We will soon give him a great reward.
﴾115﴿ And whoever opposes the Messenger, may Allah bless him and give him peace, after guidance has become clear to him, and follows a path other than the path of the believers (the Companions), We will turn him to that direction which he has chosen, and We will admit him to Hell—and what an evil destination it is.
﴾116﴿ Surely, Allah does not forgive the one who associates partners with Him, but He forgives anything less than shirk (associating partners) for whomever He wills. And whoever associates partners with Allah has indeed gone far astray.
﴾117﴿ They do not call upon anyone besides Allah except for female deities, and in reality, they only call upon a rebellious devil.
[114] This is also a refutation of the hypocrites, who used to consult each other about sinful acts. (بِصَدَقَةٍ) refers to things like collecting money for a lawful religious purpose. (أَوْ مَعْرُوفٍ) means consulting about inviting to and spreading the religion—good works. (أَوْ إِصْلَاحٍ) refers to both kinds of useful deeds: the first is physical (charity), and the second is spiritual (reconciliation)—both serve to prevent harm and corruption. However, in all of this, the intention of seeking Allah’s pleasure is necessary. The phrase (لَا خَيْرَ) in Islamic law means there is no permission for it, and it serves as strong emphasis.
[115] After the Prophet, may Allah bless him and give him peace, made things clear to them, this verse gives a warning of punishment in the Hereafter to those who oppose him. (الْمُؤْمِنِينَ) here refers specifically to the noble Companions, as the definite article (al-) indicates. Therefore, the meaning of the verse is that whoever opposes the sunnah of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and give him peace, and the way of the community of the Companions, is destined for Hell, and his mistaken path will be made clear to him. The commentators have written that from this phrase “the path of the believers,” it has been deduced that the consensus (ijma‘) of this Ummah is considered a source of Islamic law, but only after the Book (Quran) and the Sunnah.
[116] In this verse, there is a refutation of shirk (associating partners with Allah). That is, major opposition to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and give him peace, and the Companions is considered shirk.
Note: This verse also refutes the shirk of the common people—the reason for misguidance is mentioned, and the common people are very fearful of this word. In verse 48 of this surah, there was a refutation of the shirk of their religious leaders (who try to justify shirk with arguments), which is why the word “fabrication” was mentioned there.
This verse is also a refutation of the Khawarij, who considered any Muslim who committed a major sin (other than shirk) to be a disbeliever.
[117] This verse refutes shirk (associating partners with Allah) specifically in supplication. The meaning of (إِنَاثًا) is angels, according to their false beliefs, or it refers to those idolaters who made female beings their objects of worship, such as al-‘Uzza, Ba‘l, and others. Or it means “weak,” because weakness is associated with femininity—so what is mentioned is the attribute, but what is intended is the necessary result.
The meaning of “calling upon Satan” is that Satan is the cause of this whispering (waswasah), or it means that Satan would actually enter into their idols and speak to them, just as nowadays it is said that Satan extends his hand or foot from the grave to deceive people, while the occupant of the grave has no knowledge of it at all.
The first use of “supplication” (dua) here refers to calling upon someone for worship, seeking for needs to be fulfilled, and the second refers to obedience (following).
