الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا يُقَاتِلُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا يُقَاتِلُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ الطَّاغُوتِ فَقَاتِلُوا أَوْلِيَاءَ الشَّيْطَانِ إِنَّ كَيْدَ الشَّيْطَانِ كَانَ ضَعِيفًا ﴿۷۶﴾ أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِينَ قِيلَ لَهُمْ كُفُّوا أَيْدِيَكُمْ وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ فَلَمَّا كُتِبَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقِتَالُ إِذَا فَرِيقٌ مِنْهُمْ يَخْشَوْنَ النَّاسَ كَخَشْيَةِ اللَّهِ أَوْ أَشَدَّ خَشْيَةً وَقَالُوا رَبَّنَا لِمَ كَتَبْتَ عَلَيْنَا الْقِتَالَ لَوْلَا أَخَّرْتَنَا إِلَى أَجَلٍ قَرِيبٍ قُلْ مَتَاعُ الدُّنْيَا قَلِيلٌ وَالْآخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ لِمَنِ اتَّقَى وَلَا تُظْلَمُونَ فَتِيلًا ﴿۷۷﴾ أَيْنَمَا تَكُونُوا يُدْرِكْكُمُ الْمَوْتُ وَلَوْ كُنْتُمْ فِي بُرُوجٍ مُشَيَّدَةٍ وَإِنْ تُصِبْهُمْ حَسَنَةٌ يَقُولُوا هَذِهِ مِنْ عِنْدِ اللَّهِ وَإِنْ تُصِبْهُمْ سَيِّئَةٌ يَقُولُوا هَذِهِ مِنْ عِنْدِكَ قُلْ كُلٌّ مِنْ عِنْدِ اللَّهِ فَمَالِ هَؤُلَاءِ الْقَوْمِ لَا يَكَادُونَ يَفْقَهُونَ حَدِيثًا ﴿۷۸﴾
﴾76﴿ Allazeena aamanoo yuqaatiloona fee sabeelil laahi wallazeena kafaroo yuqaatiloona fee sabeelit Taaghoot faqaatiloo awliyaaa'ash Shaitaan; inna kaidash Shaitaani kaana da'eefa
﴾77﴿ Alam tara ilal lazeena qeela lahum kuffooo aidiyakum wa aqeemus Salaata wa aaatuz Zakaata falammaa kutiba 'alaihimul qitaalu izaa fareequm minhum yakhshaw nan naasa kakhashyatil laahi aw ashadda khashyah; wa qaaloo Rabbanaa lima katabta 'alainal qitaala law laaa akhkhartanaa ilaaa ajalin qareeb; qul mataa'ud dunyaa qaleelunw wal Aakhiratu khairul limanit taqaa wa laa tuzlamoona fateelaa
﴾78﴿ Ayna maa takoonoo yudrikkumul mawtu wa law kuntum fee buroojim mushai yadah; wa in tusibhum hasanatuny yaqooloo haazihee min indil laahi wa in tusibhum saiyi'atuny yaqooloo haazihee min 'indik; qul kullum min 'indillaahi famaa lihaaa 'ulaaa'il qawmi laa yakaadoona yafqahoona hadeesaa
﴾76﴿ The believers fight in the way of Allah, and the disbelievers fight in the way of Satan.
So fight against the allies of Satan—indeed, the plot of Satan is weak (compared to the plan of Allah).
﴾77﴿ Did you not see those to whom it was said, “Restrain your hands (from fighting), establish prayer, and give zakat”?
But when fighting was prescribed for them, suddenly a group of them fear people as much as—or even more than—they fear Allah, and they say, “Our Lord, why have You prescribed fighting for us? Why did You not give us respite until a near term?”
Say, “The pleasures of this world are little, and the Hereafter is better for those who are mindful of Allah. And you will not be wronged even by the thread inside a date stone.”
﴾78﴿ Wherever you may be, death will overtake you—even if you are in strongly fortified towers.
And if something good happens to them, they say, “This is from Allah.”
But if a hardship befalls them, they say, “This is from you.”
Say, “All is from Allah.”
So what is wrong with these people that they hardly understand any statement
[76] This is encouragement for jihad, showing that the goal of the believers is lofty, while the goal of the disbelievers is base, and their plots are ultimately ineffective.
Therefore, the believers should wage jihad against them.
“Kan da‘eefa” (it is weak) means that although their plots may seem strong and powerful, compared to the plans of Allah, they are weak.
[77] From this verse up to verse 91 is the second section, in which there is a warning to the hypocrites and their faults are mentioned, followed by encouragement for jihad and then a description of the different types of hypocrites.
The meaning of the verse is that when the environment is not prepared for jihad—companions are few, and there are no financial means—then fighting is not obligatory; rather, physical and financial efforts are required for training and preparing oneself for jihad.
But when fighting does become obligatory, the hypocrite, due to his love of the world, becomes lazy and hesitant to fight, and he sees only death in battle.
“Idha fariqun minhum” (“a group of them…”) is clear evidence that those referred to are hypocrites, not the Companions.
“Matā‘u’d-dunyā qalīl” (“The pleasures of this world are little”) proves that the world and all it contains, compared to the deeds of the Hereafter (one of which is jihad), are insignificant—indeed, nothing at all.
And in this verse, two characteristics of the hypocrites are mentioned.
[78] In the first part of the verse, the inevitability of death is stated—nothing can save a person from it.
The point here is that fighting in the way of Allah should not be abandoned out of fear of death.
In the second part, a characteristic of the hypocrites is mentioned: they attribute good fortune to Allah, but blame hardship and difficulty on the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace), following the manner of pessimism.
Their attribution to Allah is not due to faith, but because they consider it a right or obligation upon Allah.
In this verse, two characteristics of the hypocrites are mentioned.
