وَإِنَّ مِنْكُمْ لَمَنْ لَيُبَطِّئَنَّ فَإِنْ أَصَابَتْكُمْ مُصِيبَةٌ قَالَ قَدْ أَنْعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيَّ إِذْ لَمْ أَكُنْ مَعَهُمْ شَهِيدًا ﴿۷۲﴾ وَلَئِنْ أَصَابَكُمْ فَضْلٌ مِنَ اللَّهِ لَيَقُولَنَّ كَأَنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَهُ مَوَدَّةٌ يَا لَيْتَنِي كُنْتُ مَعَهُمْ فَأَفُوزَ فَوْزًا عَظِيمًا ﴿۷۳﴾ فَلْيُقَاتِلْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ الَّذِينَ يَشْرُونَ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا بِالْآخِرَةِ وَمَنْ يُقَاتِلْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَيُقْتَلْ أَوْ يَغْلِبْ فَسَوْفَ نُؤْتِيهِ أَجْرًا عَظِيمًا ﴿۷۴﴾ وَمَا لَكُمْ لَا تُقَاتِلُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَالْمُسْتَضْعَفِينَ مِنَ الرِّجَالِ وَالنِّسَاءِ وَالْوِلْدَانِ الَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا أَخْرِجْنَا مِنْ هَذِهِ الْقَرْيَةِ الظَّالِمِ أَهْلُهَا وَاجْعَلْ لَنَا مِنْ لَدُنْكَ وَلِيًّا وَاجْعَلْ لَنَا مِنْ لَدُنْكَ نَصِيرًا ﴿۷۵﴾
﴾72﴿ Wa inna minkum lamal la yubatti'anna fa in asaabatkum museebatun qaala qad an'amal laahu 'alaiya iz lam akum ma'ahum shaheeda
﴾73﴿ Wa la'in asaabakum fadlum minal laahi la yaqoolanna ka al lam takum bainakum wa bainahoo mawaddatuny yaa laitanee kuntu ma'ahum fa afooza fawzan 'azeemaa
﴾74﴿ Falyuqaatil fee sabeelil laahil lazeena yashroonal hayaatad dunyaa bil Aakhirah; wa may-yuqaatil fee sabeelil laahi fa yuqtal aw yaghlib fasawfa nu'teehi ajran 'azeemaa
﴾75﴿ Wa maa lakum laa tuqaatiloona fee sabeelil laahi walmustad'afeena minar rijaali wannisaaa'i walwildaanil lazeena yaqooloona Rabbanaaa akhrijnaa min haazihil qaryatiz zaalimi ahluhaa waj'al lanaa mil ladunka waliyanw waj'al lanaa mil ladunka naseeraa
﴾72﴿ And indeed, among you are those who hesitate (hold back).
So if a calamity befalls you, he says, “Allah has favored me that I was not present with them.”
﴾73﴿ And if a favor from Allah comes to you, he will surely say—as if there had been no friendship between you and him—“Oh, I wish I had been with them, then I would have achieved a great success!”
﴾74﴿ So let those who sell (sacrifice) the life of this world for the Hereafter fight in the way of Allah.
And whoever fights in the way of Allah—whether he is killed or is victorious—soon We will give him a great reward.
﴾75﴿ And what excuse do you have that you do not fight in the way of Allah (and to save) the weak among men, women, and children who say, "Our Lord, take us out of this town whose people are oppressors, and appoint for us from Yourself a protector, and appoint for us from Yourself a helper"
[72] In these two verses, there is a warning to the hypocrites—for abandoning the preparation of weapons for jihad.
And two faults of the hypocrites are mentioned here:
(1) Hesitating (being lazy or negligent),
(2) Considering staying behind from jihad as a favor from Allah.
[73] In this verse as well, two faults of the hypocrites are mentioned.
The "favor" refers to victory and war booty.
“Ka’an lam takun” (“as if there had been no friendship…”) is an interjected phrase, connected to the second characteristic in the previous verse, or it may refer to this outward statement—the pronoun refers to the hypocrite and himself.
“Ya laytani” (“Oh, I wish…”) is their inward saying.
“Fawzan ‘azeema” (“great success”) here means attaining a share of the spoils of war, and it indicates that, for the hypocrites, worldly gain is considered the greatest success.
[74] This is the third ruling regarding governance.
It means that the ruler should prepare such people for jihad who do not have love for the world and believe that in jihad, both martyrdom and victory are rewards.
“Yashrūna” here means selling and sacrificing wealth and life for jihad and matters of the Hereafter.
[75] These are the objectives of jihad: one is to strive for the supremacy of monotheism (tawhid)—this is the meaning of “in the way of Allah.”
Another is that weak men, women, and children are trapped by oppressors and are unable to migrate, so you must fight to free them.
These are the two legitimate purposes of jihad.
“The people of this town are oppressors” refers to the injustices of the people of Makkah against the noble Companions, as well as all disbelievers and polytheists who oppress weak believers and prevent them from practicing their religion.
“Waliyyan” is someone who defends them from the injustice of the oppressor.
“Nasiran” is someone who delivers them safely from their homeland to safety.
