وَالْمُحْصَنَاتُ 173 النِّســاء

أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا نَصِيبًا مِنَ الْكِتَابِ يَشْتَرُونَ الضَّلَالَةَ وَيُرِيدُونَ أَنْ تَضِلُّوا السَّبِيلَ ﴿۴۴﴾ وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِأَعْدَائِكُمْ وَكَفَى بِاللَّهِ وَلِيًّا وَكَفَى بِاللَّهِ نَصِيرًا ﴿۴۵﴾ مِنَ الَّذِينَ هَادُوا يُحَرِّفُونَ الْكَلِمَ عَنْ مَوَاضِعِهِ وَيَقُولُونَ سَمِعْنَا وَعَصَيْنَا وَاسْمَعْ غَيْرَ مُسْمَعٍ وَرَاعِنَا لَيًّا بِأَلْسِنَتِهِمْ وَطَعْنًا فِي الدِّينِ وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ قَالُوا سَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا وَاسْمَعْ وَانْظُرْنَا لَكَانَ خَيْرًا لَهُمْ وَأَقْوَمَ وَلَكِنْ لَعَنَهُمُ اللَّهُ بِكُفْرِهِمْ فَلَا يُؤْمِنُونَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا ﴿۴۶﴾ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ آمِنُوا بِمَا نَزَّلْنَا مُصَدِّقًا لِمَا مَعَكُمْ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ نَطْمِسَ وُجُوهًا فَنَرُدَّهَا عَلَى أَدْبَارِهَا أَوْ نَلْعَنَهُمْ كَمَا لَعَنَّا أَصْحَابَ السَّبْتِ وَكَانَ أَمْرُ اللَّهِ مَفْعُولًا ﴿۴۷﴾

﴾44﴿ Alam tara ilal lazeena ootoo naseebam minal Kitaabi yashtaroonad dalaalata wa yureedoona an tadillus sabeel
﴾45﴿ Wallaahu a'lamu bi a'daaa'i-kum; wa kafaa billaahi waliyyanw wa kafaa billaahi naseera
﴾46﴿ Minal lazeena haadoo yuharrifoonal Kalima 'am mawaadi'ihee wa yaqooloona sami'naa wa 'asainaa wasma' ghaira musma'inw wa raa'inaa laiyam bi alsinatihim wa ta'nan fiddeen; wa law annahum qaaloo sami'naa wa ata'naa wasma' wanzurnaa lakaana khairal lahum wa aqwama wa laakil la' a'nahumul laahu bikufrihim falaa yu'minoona illaa qaleela
﴾47﴿ Yaaa aiyuha lazeena ootul Kitaaba aaminoo bimaa nazzalnaa musadiqallimaa ma'akum min qabli an natmisa wujoohan fanaruddahaa 'alaaa adbaarihaaa aw nal'anahum kamaa la'annaaa Ashaabas Sabt; wa kaana amrul laahi maf'oolaa

﴾44﴿ Have you not seen those who were given a portion of the Book? They purchase misguidance and wish to lead you astray from the right path.
﴾45﴿ And Allah is most knowing of your enemies, and Allah is sufficient as a Protector, and Allah is sufficient as a Helper.
﴾46﴿ Among the Jews are some who distort the words of Allah from their [proper] places and say, “We hear and we disobey,” and “Hear, but may you not hear,” and “Ra‘ina,” twisting their tongues and mocking the religion [of Islam]. If they had said, “We hear and we obey,” and, “Hear,” and, “Look at us,” it would have been better and more proper for them. But Allah has cursed them because of their disbelief, so they do not believe except for a few.
﴾47﴿ O People of the Book, believe in what We have sent down, confirming that which is with you, before We efface faces and turn them backwards, or curse them as We cursed the people of the Sabbath. And the command of Allah is always executed.

[44] From this verse up to verse (7) is the third section, in which seventeen evils of the People of the Book are mentioned, along with warnings to them, and at the end there is both a threat and glad tidings. In this verse, two of their evils are mentioned: (1) embracing misguidance, and (2) leading others astray.
[45] That is, even though they are religious scholars, they are still enemies of your religion. This too is a warning. And in this, one of their evils is mentioned — that they are enemies of the Muslims. (وَكَفَى) — this phrase is a clear affirmation of tawheed (the oneness of Allah), meaning that in guardianship and authority, there is no need for any partner besides Allah.
[46] This too is a warning. What is meant here is distortion of meaning — that they alter the meanings to support their own shirk (associating partners with Allah) and innovations. They say “we hear” with their tongues, but inwardly they say “we disobey.” The phrase “ghayr musmi‘” is ambiguous: outwardly, it means “no one can make you hear bad words,” but its wrong meaning is “may Allah make you deaf or cause you to die,” because the dead do not hear. In this verse, six of their evils are mentioned. (إِلَّا قَلِيلًا) means either a few of them truly believe, or they only believe a little — meaning they only accept Allah as Creator, but still commit shirk, and also deny the Messenger and the Qur’an.
[47] This is an invitation to faith for the People of the Book regarding the Noble Qur’an, and in it there is a warning of the punishment to be given in this world. The first punishment is that their faces will be turned into the likeness of the backs of their heads, and the second punishment is their transformation, like the Sabbath people who were turned into apes. This is because either they will openly deny and say falsehoods against the true religion—and for this crime, the first type of punishment is appropriate and fitting to the crime—or they distort the shape of the religion through tricks, so for this crime, the second type of punishment is appropriate and fitting to it. Benefit: If it is asked, “Some of the People of the Book have believed, yet this punishment did not befall them?” The first answer: The meaning was that if none of them believed, then these punishments would certainly come. But since some believed, these punishments were lifted from all of them. The second answer: These punishments are still to come. The third answer: These punishments refer to the Hereafter. The fourth answer: This is a metaphor for their humiliation and degradation.
