إِذْ قَالَ اللَّهُ يَا عِيسَى إِنِّي مُتَوَفِّيكَ وَرَافِعُكَ إِلَيَّ وَمُطَهِّرُكَ مِنَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَجَاعِلُ الَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوكَ فَوْقَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ ثُمَّ إِلَيَّ مَرْجِعُكُمْ فَأَحْكُمُ بَيْنَكُمْ فِيمَا كُنْتُمْ فِيهِ تَخْتَلِفُونَ ﴿۵۵﴾ فَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا فَأُعَذِّبُهُمْ عَذَابًا شَدِيدًا فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ وَمَا لَهُمْ مِنْ نَاصِرِينَ ﴿۵۶﴾ وَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ فَيُوَفِّيهِمْ أُجُورَهُمْ وَاللَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الظَّالِمِينَ ﴿۵۷﴾
﴾55﴿ Iz qaalal laahu yaa 'Eesaaa innee mutawaffeeka wa raafi'uka ilaiya wa mutah hiruka minal lazeena kafaroo wa jaa'ilul lazeenattaba ooka fawqal lazeena kafarooo ilaa Yawmil Qiyaamati summa ilaiya marji'ukum fa ahkumu bainakum feemaa kuntum feehi takhtaliifoon
﴾56﴿ Fa ammal lazeena kafaroo fa u'az zibuhum 'azaaban shadeedan fiddunyaa wal Aakhirati wa maa lahum min naasireen
﴾57﴿ Wa ammal lazeena aamanoo wa 'amilus saalihaati fa yuwaffeehim ujoorahum; wallaahu laa yuhibbuz zaalimeen
﴾55﴿ When Allah said: “O Jesus! Indeed, I will take you completely (from the earth), and I will raise you up to Myself, and I will protect you from the disbelievers. And I will make those who follow you superior to the disbelievers until the Day of Resurrection. Then to Me is your return, and I will judge between you concerning that over which you used to differ.”
﴾56﴿ So those who disbelieved—I will punish them with a severe punishment in this world and the Hereafter, and they will have no helpers.
﴾57﴿ And those who have believed and acted according to the way of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace)—Allah will grant them their full reward, and Allah does not love the wrongdoers.
[55] This is Allah’s plan for the protection of Jesus (peace be upon him).
“Mutawaffīka” in Arabic linguistically means “to take something completely,” and metaphorically, it can refer to death. But here, its literal meaning is intended, as there is no reason to take it figuratively.
“Wa mutahhiruka” means to keep him pure—that is, to keep him away from their evil deeds and intentions.
“Fawq” (above) means being superior in rank and proof, not in terms of governance.
“Ilā” (to/towards) is one of the allegorical terms; here, it means a place where no one else has any control, and that is the heavens. “Ilā” is mentioned many times in relation to Allah, like: “To Him ascends good words” or “To Him you will return.”
The followers of Jesus (peace be upon him) are those who have the belief in Tawhid (the oneness of Allah) and regard Jesus (peace be upon him) as a Messenger; these are the believers of this Ummah (community).
[56] This is both a worldly and an otherworldly warning for those who oppose the religion of Jesus, peace be upon him.
[57] This is a glad tidings for the believers, whether they are from the community of Jesus (peace be upon him) or from the final community.
(“And Allah does not love...”) In this there is an indication that, in this world, someone might taste sweetness or attain progress, but this is not proof of Allah’s love.
