وَإِذِ اسْتَسْقَى مُوسَى لِقَوْمِهِ فَقُلْنَا اضْرِبْ بِعَصَاكَ الْحَجَرَ فَانْفَجَرَتْ مِنْهُ اثْنَتَا عَشْرَةَ عَيْنًا قَدْ عَلِمَ كُلُّ أُنَاسٍ مَشْرَبَهُمْ كُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا مِنْ رِزْقِ اللَّهِ وَلَا تَعْثَوْا فِي الْأَرْضِ مُفْسِدِينَ ﴿60﴾ وَإِذْ قُلْتُمْ يَا مُوسَى لَنْ نَصْبِرَ عَلَى طَعَامٍ وَاحِدٍ فَادْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ يُخْرِجْ لَنَا مِمَّا تُنْبِتُ الْأَرْضُ مِنْ بَقْلِهَا وَقِثَّائِهَا وَفُومِهَا وَعَدَسِهَا وَبَصَلِهَا قَالَ أَتَسْتَبْدِلُونَ الَّذِي هُوَ أَدْنَى بِالَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ اهْبِطُوا مِصْرًا فَإِنَّ لَكُمْ مَا سَأَلْتُمْ وَضُرِبَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الذِّلَّةُ وَالْمَسْكَنَةُ وَبَاءُوا بِغَضَبٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ ذَلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا يَكْفُرُونَ بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ وَيَقْتُلُونَ النَّبِيِّينَ بِغَيْرِ الْحَقِّ ذَلِكَ بِمَا عَصَوْا وَكَانُوا يَعْتَدُونَ ﴿61﴾
﴾60﴿ Wa izis tasqaa Moosaa liqawmihee faqulnad rib bi'asaakal hajara fanfajarat minhusnataaa 'ashrata 'aynan qad 'alima kullu unaasim mash rabahum kuloo washraboo mir rizqil laahi wa laa ta'saw fil ardi mufsideen
﴾61﴿ Wa iz qultum yaa Moosaa lan nasbira 'alaa ta'aaminw waahidin fad'u lanaa rabbaka yukhrij lanaa mimmaa tumbitul ardu mimbaqlihaa wa qis saaa'ihaa wa foomihaa wa 'adasihaa wa basalihaa qaala atastabdiloonal lazee huwa adnaa billazee huwa khayr; ihbitoo misran fa inna lakum maa sa altum; wa duribat 'alaihimuz zillatu walmaskanatu wa baaa'oo bighadabim minal laah; zaalika bi annahum kaano yakfuroona bi aayaatil laahi wa yaqtuloonan Nabiyyeena bighairil haqq; zaalika bimaa 'asaw wa kaanoo ya'tadoon
﴾60﴿ And when Moses (peace be upon him) asked for water for his people, We said, “Strike the stone with your staff.” Then twelve springs gushed out from it, and every tribe knew its drinking place. (We said,) “Eat and drink from the provision of Allah, and do not act corruptly in the land"
﴾61﴿ And when you said, “O Moses (peace be upon him), we will never be patient with just one kind of food, so call upon your Lord for us to bring forth for us what the earth grows—its herbs, cucumbers, garlic (or wheat), lentils, and onions,” he (Moses) said, “Would you exchange that which is better for that which is inferior? Go down to a city—you will have what you have asked for.”
Then humiliation (outwardly) and disgrace (inwardly) were cast upon them, and they incurred the wrath of Allah.
This was because they used to disbelieve in the signs of Allah and kill the prophets without right.
That was because they disobeyed and used to transgress the limits
[60] This is the eighth blessing. The Children of Israel consisted of twelve tribes, and each tribe had its own designated water source, which it recognized—so that conflict would not arise among them.
(Mufsidīn) – meaning: do not show ingratitude for this blessing.
[61] This is the mention of the second punishment, which came as a result of replacing divine blessings, and they also did not accept the counsel of Moses (peace be upon him).
Out of greed for food, they exchanged Allah’s blessings.
The first consequence was humiliation—that is, they became entangled in worldly landownership, the kind that distracts a Muslim from religious duties.
This verse hints that a “city” is defined as a place where all necessities of human life are present.
Humiliation (ذلّت) is when a person outwardly shows disgrace—wearing worthless clothing and begging.
Misery (المسكنة) is an inner disposition of lowliness and dependence on creation.
Even if the Jews are wealthy, these traits still exist within them.
“With wrath from Allah” (بِغَضَبٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ) means the effects of blessings were taken away—what was once elevation turned into decline—and their hearts developed hatred toward the true religion.
They became deserving of great punishment in the Hereafter.
“They disbelieved in the signs of Allah” (يَكْفُرُونَ بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ) – There are many ways they committed disbelief in Allah’s signs:
Altering verses in the Torah, especially those related to monotheism and the Final Prophet.
Hiding the truth.
Denying the Qur'an and the Gospel.
“They disobeyed” (عَصَوْا) – This refers to sins of immorality (fisq).
“And they used to transgress” (وَكَانُوا يَعْتَدُونَ) – This refers to the sin of innovation (bidʿah), which is adding to the religion from one’s own desires.
This also shows that a small sin can lead to a major sin if one does not repent.
“That was because they disobeyed...” (ذَٰلِكَ بِمَا عَصَوْا) – “That” refers to their disbelief and killing of the prophets (peace be upon them), and its cause was their disobedience and transgression beyond limits.
This verse—as well as verse 87 of this surah, verses 21, 181, 182, and 112 of Surah Āl ʿImrān, verse 155 of Surah An-Nisā’, and verse 70 of Surah Al-Mā’idah—clearly prove that the Jews did kill the prophets (peace be upon them).
Many hadiths also confirm this.
There is no real argument from those who deny this fact—except that they seek to appease the Jews.
