يَعْتَذِرُونَ 440 التوبة

وَقُلِ اعْمَلُوا فَسَيَرَى اللَّهُ عَمَلَكُمْ وَرَسُولُهُ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَسَتُرَدُّونَ إِلَى عَالِمِ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ فَيُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ ﴿۱۰۵﴾ وَآخَرُونَ مُرْجَوْنَ لِأَمْرِ اللَّهِ إِمَّا يُعَذِّبُهُمْ وَإِمَّا يَتُوبُ عَلَيْهِمْ وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ ﴿۱۰۶﴾ وَالَّذِينَ اتَّخَذُوا مَسْجِدًا ضِرَارًا وَكُفْرًا وَتَفْرِيقًا بَيْنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَإِرْصَادًا لِمَنْ حَارَبَ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ مِنْ قَبْلُ وَلَيَحْلِفُنَّ إِنْ أَرَدْنَا إِلَّا الْحُسْنَى وَاللَّهُ يَشْهَدُ إِنَّهُمْ لَكَاذِبُونَ ﴿۱۰۷﴾

﴾105﴿ Wa qul i'maloo fasayaral laahu 'amalakum wa Rasooluhoo wal mu'minoon; wa saturaddoona ilaa 'Aalimil Ghaibi washshahaadati fa yunabbi'ukum bimaa kuntum ta'maloon
﴾106﴿ Wa aakharoona murjawna li amril laahi immaa yu'azzibuhum wa immaa yatoobu 'alaihim; wallaahu 'Aleemun Hakeem
﴾107﴿ Wallazeenat takhazoo masjidan diraaranw wa kufranw wa tafreeqan bainal mu'mineena wa irsaadal liman haarabal laaha wa Rasoolahoo min qabl; wa la yahlifunna in aradnaaa illal husnaa wallaahu yash hadu innahum lakaaziboon

﴾105﴿ Say: "Act, for surely Allah sees your deeds, and so do His Messenger (May Allah bless him and give him peace) and the believers. Soon you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the seen, then He will inform you of what you used to do."
﴾106﴿ And there are others whose case has been deferred for the decision of Allah—either Allah will punish them or grant them repentance. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
﴾107﴿ (And among the hypocrites) are those who built a mosque to cause harm and disbelief, and to create division among the believers, and as a station for whoever previously fought against Allah and His Messenger (May Allah bless him and give him peace). And indeed, they swear: "We intended nothing but good." But Allah testifies that surely they are liars.

[105] This verse was initially addressed to the Companions, and then extended to all believers.
Note: In this verse, “وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ” (the believers) is mentioned, while in verse 94, it was not.
The reason is that verse 94 was about the hypocrites, who used to hide their actions from the believers. Therefore, mentioning the believers there wasn’t relevant, as they were not aware of the hypocrites’ inner reality.
But this verse is about the believers, and a believer’s deeds are often done openly, with sincerity and honesty, and are often known and witnessed by fellow believers.
That’s why “the believers” are mentioned here—to show that their good actions are seen, acknowledged, and shared in spirit by the believing community.
[106] This verse refers to the third group of the noble Companions—namely: Ka‘b ibn Mālik, Hilāl ibn Umayyah, and Murārah ibn Rabī‘ (May Allah be pleased with him).
They stayed behind from the Expedition of Tabuk without any valid excuse, and they also delayed their repentance.
The detailed account of their story is found in the authentic Hadith of Bukhārī.
In this verse, their judgment was left pending, and their repentance was accepted after fifty days, which is later mentioned in verse 118.
(إِمَّا يُعَذِّبُهُمْ وَإِمَّا يَتُوبُ عَلَيْهِمْ) – This expression of possibility is not due to uncertainty on Allah’s part, but from the perspective of the people—meaning: you must wait and see whether Allah will punish them or accept their repentance.
It emphasizes the suspense and gravity of the moment for those Companions and the community.
[107] This verse is a clear warning regarding a specific action of the hypocrites—namely, the building of Masjid Ḍirār (the harmful mosque).
This incident is mentioned here to distinguish between the believers and the hypocrites, as this mosque was built in opposition to Masjid Qubā’.
The hypocrites had been advised and guided in this plan by Abū ‘Āmir the Monk, who had apostatized and later allied with the Roman emperor (Caesar) to plot against the Muslims.
Background:
When they finished building this mosque, they came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)—at the time, he was preparing for the Expedition of Tabuk.
They claimed: “We have built a mosque for the weak and elderly who cannot reach Masjid Qubā’ or Masjid al-Nabawī. We would like you to lead the first prayer and bless it.”
The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: “I am currently preparing for travel. When I return, I will pray there.”
However, after returning from Tabuk, Allah revealed this verse, exposing their hidden motives.
In verse 107, four evil characteristics of Masjid Ḍirār (reflecting the builders) are mentioned:
1. Harm (Ḍarar) – They intended to harm the existing mosque, i.e., Masjid Qubā’.
Ḍirār differs from Ḍarar: Ḍirār is malicious and purely harmful, with no benefit to anyone. Ḍarar might have some benefit to the doer, but causes harm to others.
2. Disbelief (Kufr) – The mosque was founded on disbelief, as its builders were not sincere Muslims, and their intent was anti-Islamic.
3. Division (Tafrīq) – Their goal was to create division among the believers, undermining the unity of the Muslim community.
4. Ambush or Base (Irṣād) – They prepared it as a station to host and support those opposed to Islam, including mushriks and innovators.
Note: This verse proves that any religious act done with corrupt intention (such as power, division, or fame) is a sign of hypocrisy and spiritually harmful.
(مِنْ قَبْلُ) – refers either to before the mosque was built, or before the Battle of Tabuk, i.e., when their hypocrisy was already apparent.
(إِلَّا الْحُسْنَى) – This was their claim: “We only intended good,” meaning: “We built it for the old and weak who cannot reach the main mosques.”
But Allah exposed their lie and the evil hidden behind their so-called good intention.
