﴾79﴿ Allazeena yalmizoonal mut tawwi'eena minalmu'mineena fis sadaqaati wallazeena laa yajidoona illaa juhdahum fayaskharoona minhum sakhiral laahu minhum wa lahum azaabun aleem

﴾76﴿ But when Allah gave them out of His bounty (some wealth), they became stingy with it and turned away (from their covenant), and they are averse.
﴾77﴿ So Allah placed hypocrisy in their hearts until the Day they will meet Him, because they broke their promise to Allah regarding what they had promised, and because they used to lie.
﴾78﴿ Do they not know that Allah surely knows their secret talk and their private counsel, and that Allah is the Knower of all hidden things.
﴾79﴿ (These hypocrites) are those who criticize the believers who willingly give charity, and those who can find nothing to give except their own effort—they mock them. Allah will mock them in return, and for them is a painful punishment.

[76] In this verse, two disgraceful traits of the hypocrites are mentioned.
This verse serves as evidence that whoever does not fully fulfill their vow (nadhir) is considered sinful.
[77] This verse is also connected to the previous verse and mentions one of the hypocrites’ disgraceful traits.
(يَوْمِ يَلْقَوْنَهُ) – refers to the Day they meet Him, meaning the Day of Death.
(فَأَعْقَبَهُمْ) – the subject pronoun refers either to Allah the Exalted (i.e., Allah caused the consequence), or to their stinginess (i.e., their own miserliness led to the consequence).
Similarly, the pronoun in (يَلْقَوْنَهُ) can also refer to Allah the Exalted (the day they meet Him), or to their stinginess, with the interpretation being: the day they face the result or punishment of their miserliness.
[78] This verse is also a warning to the hypocrites.
The message is that Allah the Exalted is fully aware of all the actions of these hypocrites, and therefore, He will punish them accordingly.
This verse is clear evidence for the statement that knowledge of the unseen (‘ilm al-ghayb) is a quality exclusive to Allah the Exalted.
(سِرَّهُمْ) – refers to what they keep hidden in their hearts.
(نَجْوَاهُمْ) – refers to their secret consultations and private discussions.
[79] This verse is also a warning to the hypocrites, and it mentions two of their disgraceful traits.
The meaning is: if someone spends a lot in the way of Allah due to wealth, the hypocrites criticize him and say he is showing off (riya).
And if someone spends a little due to poverty, they mock him for offering too little.
Benefit: This verse is clear evidence that those who criticize the noble Companions (Sahabah) are themselves hypocrites, just like the Shi‘a and Rawafid (extremist sects), who are known for insulting the Companions.
