وَلَوْ أَنَّ أَهْلَ الْقُرَى آمَنُوا وَاتَّقَوْا لَفَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ بَرَكَاتٍ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَلَكِنْ كَذَّبُوا فَأَخَذْنَاهُمْ بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ ﴿۹۶﴾ أَفَأَمِنَ أَهْلُ الْقُرَى أَنْ يَأْتِيَهُمْ بَأْسُنَا بَيَاتًا وَهُمْ نَائِمُونَ ﴿۹۷﴾ أَوَأَمِنَ أَهْلُ الْقُرَى أَنْ يَأْتِيَهُمْ بَأْسُنَا ضُحًى وَهُمْ يَلْعَبُونَ ﴿۹۸﴾
﴾96﴿ Wa law anna ahlal quraaa aamanoo wattaqaw lafatahnaa 'alaihim barakaatim minas samaaa'i wal ardi wa laakin kazzaboo fa akhaznaahum bimaa kaanoo yaksiboon
﴾97﴿ Afa amina ahlul quraaa ai ya'tiyahum ba'sunaa bayaatanw wa hum naaa'imoon
﴾98﴿ Awa amina ahlul quraaa ai ya'tiyahum ba'sunaa duhanw wa hum yal'aboon
﴾96﴿ And if the people of the towns had believed and guarded themselves from shirk, We would have surely opened for them blessings from the heavens and the earth. But they denied (the messengers), so We seized them (with punishment) because of what they used to do.
﴾97﴿ Do the people of the towns feel secure from the coming of Our punishment upon them by night while they are asleep
﴾98﴿ Do the people of the towns feel secure from the coming of Our punishment upon them in the forenoon while they are engaged in play
[96] This also pertains to past events. The point is that faith and protecting oneself from shirk (associating partners with Allah) lead to the descent of blessings. But those nations committed shirk and went against the command of Allah the Exalted, so punishments came upon them.
The purpose of this verse is to give advice to later nations so that they may attain faith and piety for worldly prosperity.
"Barakātin" refers to rain, vegetation, grain, fruit, and abundance in provision — as mentioned in verses 11 and 12 of Surah Nuh.
"Fa akhadhnāhum" refers to the various punishments that came upon the past nations.
[97] These four verses describe the condition of the present people — those who commit shirk — showing that they too cannot escape the punishment of Allah the Exalted, whether it comes by night or by day.
In this verse, the punishment of the night is mentioned.
"Afa-aminah" — the fa indicates sequence, and the meaning of "al-qurā" refers to the present people. That is, after denial (of the truth), the coming of punishment becomes inevitable.
[98] In this verse, the punishment of mid-morning (from the day) is mentioned. It hints that the deniers are either asleep or engaged in play at that time.
This is their worldly life — spent in sleep and amusement.
It becomes clear that spending the whole night sleeping and playing during mid-morning is not appropriate for the character of the believers.
