وَإِذَا صُرِفَتْ أَبْصَارُهُمْ تِلْقَاءَ أَصْحَابِ النَّارِ قَالُوا رَبَّنَا لَا تَجْعَلْنَا مَعَ الْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ ﴿۴۷﴾ وَنَادَى أَصْحَابُ الْأَعْرَافِ رِجَالًا يَعْرِفُونَهُمْ بِسِيمَاهُمْ قَالُوا مَا أَغْنَى عَنْكُمْ جَمْعُكُمْ وَمَا كُنْتُمْ تَسْتَكْبِرُونَ ﴿۴۸﴾ أَهَؤُلَاءِ الَّذِينَ أَقْسَمْتُمْ لَا يَنَالُهُمُ اللَّهُ بِرَحْمَةٍ ادْخُلُوا الْجَنَّةَ لَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْكُمْ وَلَا أَنْتُمْ تَحْزَنُونَ ﴿۴۹﴾ وَنَادَى أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ أَصْحَابَ الْجَنَّةِ أَنْ أَفِيضُوا عَلَيْنَا مِنَ الْمَاءِ أَوْ مِمَّا رَزَقَكُمُ اللَّهُ قَالُوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ حَرَّمَهُمَا عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ ﴿۵۰﴾
﴾47﴿ Wa izaa surifat absaaruhum tilqaaa'a Ashaabin Naari qaaloo Rabbanaa laa taj'alnaa ma'al qawmiz zaalimeen
﴾48﴿ Wa naadaaa Ashaabul a'raafi rijaalany ya'rifoonahum biseemaahum qaaloo maaa aghnaa 'ankum jam'ukum wa maa kuntum tastakbiroon
﴾49﴿ A haaa'ulaaa'il lazeena aqsamtum laa yanaaluhumul laahu bi rahmah; udkhulul Jannata laa khawfun 'alaikum wa laaa antum tahzanoon
﴾50﴿ Wa naadaaa Ashaabun Naari Ashaabal jannati an afeedoo 'alainaa minal maaa'i aw mimma razaqakumul laah; qaaloo innal laaha harrama humaa 'alal kaafireen
﴾47﴿ And when their eyes are turned toward the people of the Fire, they will say, “O our Lord, do not place us with the wrongdoing people.”
﴾48﴿ And the people of the Heights will call out to certain men (in Hell) whom they recognize by their marks, saying, “Of no benefit to you was your gathering (of wealth or followers) and the pride you used to show.”
﴾49﴿ (The angels will say to the disbelievers:) “Are these the ones about whom you used to swear that Allah would never show them mercy?” (Then it will be said to the people of the Heights:) “Enter Paradise—there is no fear upon you, nor will you grieve.”
﴾50﴿ And the people of the Fire will call out to the people of Paradise, “Pour upon us some water, or give us some of what Allah has provided you.” They will say, “Indeed, Allah has forbidden both of them to the disbelievers.”
[47] There is a subtle indication in the passive verb form that they do not turn toward Hell of their own will. Allah, the Exalted, turns their faces toward the Fire without their choice. So they become fearful, thinking, “What if Allah takes us toward Hell?” Hence, they begin to supplicate: “Our Lord...” — with a sigh of distress.
[48] This is the second call of the people of A‘rāf to the people of Hell. “Rijālan” refers to the wealthy and arrogant ones who denied monotheism.
“Mā aghnā” — “mā” here is either negative or interrogative.
“Jam‘ukum” refers to the gathering of wealth or companions.
“Wa mā kuntum tastakbirūn” — this refers to worldly possessions or followers (such as disciples and the like).
[49] This is the statement of the angels, addressed to the people of Hell: “Enter!”
It is also the angels’ statement to the companions of A‘rāf.
“Aqsamtum” is similar to what is mentioned in Surah An‘ām, verse 35, and from verses 29 to 32 of Surah Al-Mutaffifīn.
[50] This is the fourth call, occurring when the people of A‘rāf have moved away.
This indicates that the people of Hell experience hunger and thirst and are eternally deprived of the blessings of Paradise.
“Mimmā razaqakum” refers to the various drinks of Paradise, so it is connected with “afīḍū” (pour forth), or it may refer to the foods, with “ulqū” (give) being implied but hidden.
“Ḥarramahumā” refers to linguistic prohibition, meaning “prevention,” because in the Hereafter there is no legal (shar‘i) prohibition or allowance.
