﴾141﴿ They are those who await (the outcome) regarding you: so if you (believers) gain a victory from Allah, they say, “Were we not with you?” But if the disbelievers have a share of it, they say, “Did we not have the upper hand over you, and did we not protect you from the believers?” So Allah will judge between you on the Day of Resurrection, and Allah will never grant the disbelievers a way (of dominance or argument) over the believers.
﴾142﴿ Surely the hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but He (in reality) deceives them in return.
And when they stand for prayer, they stand lazily, showing off to the people, and they do not remember Allah except a little.
﴾143﴿ They waver (between belief and disbelief), neither with the believers nor with the disbelievers.
And whoever Allah leads astray, you will never find any way for him.
﴾144﴿ O believers! Do not take the disbelievers as friends instead of the believers.
Do you wish to give Allah a clear case against yourselves
[141] In this verse, three evil qualities of the hypocrites are also mentioned — that whoever has the strength, they side with whomever benefits them in this world.
Benefit: When disbelievers have some temporary dominance over the Muslims in this world, this is merely a worldly share that Allah grants to whomever He wills; it is not true divine victory, so it is called a “portion” (naṣīb), not “victory” (fatḥ).
This is because in the last part of the verse, Allah says that He will not give the disbelievers a way of victory over the believers.
(Alam nastaḥwidh) — here, they are reminding the disbelievers of their favor, saying: “Had we joined the believers, we would have overpowered you.”
(Al-mu’minīn) — this refers to the true believers.
Sabīlan — means dominance, and if sometimes the disbelievers prevail over the believers, it is due to weak faith; or, “sabīlan” can also mean proof or argument.
[142] In this verse, four qualities are mentioned.
Laziness here does not mean a natural state, but that they do not see prayer as a reward or obligation, so they perform it with negligence.
When they do perform it, it is only for show (riya’).
As for “remembering Allah a little,” it means there is no sincerity in it, nor is it according to the way of the Prophet — even if they mention Allah often with their tongues or on prayer beads.
[143] In this verse, one quality of the hypocrites is mentioned: (mudhabbadhīn) — meaning being confused and unsettled.
(Lā ilā hā’ulā’) — “not with these” — this explains their confusion, as they do not belong to either side.
[144] After mentioning the evil qualities of the hypocrites, the believers are then prohibited from befriending them.
(Taj‘alū lillāhi ʿalaykum) — meaning, befriending the disbelievers becomes a clear proof from Allah against you, making you deserving of punishment.
