يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَكُونُوا كَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَقَالُوا لِإِخْوَانِهِمْ إِذَا ضَرَبُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ أَوْ كَانُوا غُزًّى لَوْ كَانُوا عِنْدَنَا مَا مَاتُوا وَمَا قُتِلُوا لِيَجْعَلَ اللَّهُ ذَلِكَ حَسْرَةً فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ وَاللَّهُ يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ وَاللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌ ﴿۱۵۶﴾ وَلَئِنْ قُتِلْتُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أَوْ مُتُّمْ لَمَغْفِرَةٌ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَرَحْمَةٌ خَيْرٌ مِمَّا يَجْمَعُونَ ﴿۱۵۷﴾ وَلَئِنْ مُتُّمْ أَوْ قُتِلْتُمْ لَإِلَى اللَّهِ تُحْشَرُونَ ﴿۱۵۸﴾ فَبِمَا رَحْمَةٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ لِنْتَ لَهُمْ وَلَوْ كُنْتَ فَظًّا غَلِيظَ الْقَلْبِ لَانْفَضُّوا مِنْ حَوْلِكَ فَاعْفُ عَنْهُمْ وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ وَشَاوِرْهُمْ فِي الْأَمْرِ فَإِذَا عَزَمْتَ فَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُتَوَكِّلِينَ ﴿۱۵۹﴾
﴾156﴿ Yaaa ayyuhal lazeena aamanoo laa takoonoo kallazeena kafaroo wa qaaloo li ikhwaanihim izaa daraboo fil ardi aw kaanoo ghuzzal law kaanoo 'indanaa maa maatoo wa maa qutiloo liyaj'alal laahu zaalika hasratan fee quloobihim; wallaahu yuhyee wa yumeet; wallaahu bimaa ta'maloona Baseer
﴾157﴿ Wa la'in qutiltum fee sabeelil laahi aw muttum lamaghfiratum minal laahi wa rahmatun khairum mimmaa yajma'oon
﴾158﴿ Wa la'im muttum 'aw qutiltum la il allahi tuhsharoon
﴾159﴿ Fabimaa rahmatim minal laahi linta lahum wa law kunta fazzan ghaleezal qalbi lanfaddoo min hawlika fa'afu 'anhum wastaghfir lahum wa shaawirhum fil amri fa izaa 'azamta fatawakkal 'alal laah; innallaaha yuhibbul mutawak kileen
﴾156﴿ O you who believe! Do not be like those who disbelieved (through hypocrisy) and said about their relatives, when they traveled through the land or went out for battle, “If they had been with us, they would not have died or been killed”—so that Allah may make this regret in their hearts. And Allah gives life and causes death, and Allah is All-Seeing of what you do.
﴾157﴿ And if you are killed in the path of Allah or die, surely forgiveness and mercy from Allah are better than whatever (wealth) they accumulate.
﴾158﴿ And if you die or are killed, surely Allah will gather you all together.
﴾159﴿ So by mercy from Allah, you were gentle with them. And if you had been harsh and hard-hearted, they would have dispersed from around you. So pardon them, seek forgiveness for them, and consult them in matters. Then, when you have resolved, put your trust in Allah. Surely, Allah loves those who trust Him.
[156] In this verse, a noble character trait is taught to prevent defeat: do not imitate the hypocrites in your words, especially in using the phrase “if only” (لو) in opposition to Allah’s decree. (لِيَجْعَلَ اللَّهُ) – the lām here is either for the consequence of lā takūnū (“so that the end result of their words is only regret and sorrow, with no benefit”), or it is the lām of cause, connected to lā takūnū, and dhālika refers to not accepting the speech of the hypocrites.
[157] Since the hypocrites considered martyrdom and death in the path of Allah to be evil and discouraged people from it, in this verse, encouragement is given for martyrdom. (وَرَحْمَةٌ) refers to the special rewards, which include entry into Paradise.
[158] In this verse, both natural death and being killed are mentioned, even if not in the path of Allah. Since in battle, martyrdom (being killed) often comes before natural death, in the previous verse “being killed” is mentioned first. In general situations, natural death is more common, so in this verse, “death” is mentioned first. It is also said that in these two verses, three types of people are alluded to: one type acts for the forgiveness of sins, another for the attainment of Paradise, and the third for the attainment of Allah’s vision (seeing Allah).
[159] In this verse, the attribute of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) is mentioned—that his character was gentle. This indicates that a leader in striving (jihad) should also possess such qualities. The honor of the Companions is also mentioned, even though they made a mistake at Uhud.
(فَبِمَا رَحْمَةٍ) – this indicates that even the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was in need of Allah’s mercy for his qualities.
The meaning of tawakkul (trust in Allah), as written in Ma‘ālim at-Tanzīl, is: one does not consider anyone as a helper except Allah, nor as a provider except Him, nor as aware of one’s circumstances except Allah. Likewise, tawakkul is to use means as permitted by Shari‘ah while placing reliance upon Allah.
