﴾106﴿ The Day when some faces will become white and some faces will become black.
As for those whose faces become black, (it will be said to them), “Did you disbelieve after your belief? Then taste the punishment for your disbelief.”
And as for those whose faces become white, they will be in the mercy of Allah; they will abide therein forever.
﴾107﴿ And as for those whose faces become white, they will be in the mercy of Allah; they will abide therein forever.
﴾108﴿ These are the verses of Allah, We recite them to you to make the truth clear, and Allah does not intend any injustice to the worlds.
﴾109﴿ To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, and all affairs are returned exclusively to Allah.
﴾110﴿ You enjoin what is good for the benefit of people, and you forbid what is wrong, and you believe in Allah.
And if the People of the Book had believed, it would surely have been better for them.
Some of them do believe, but most of them are defiantly disobedient.
[106] The commentators, may Allah have mercy on them, have narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the faces of the followers of the Sunnah will become white, and the faces of the innovators (those who introduce bid‘ah) will become black, and this is a warning.
This is similar to verses 38 and 40 of Surah Abasa.
(Did you disbelieve?)—previously, it was hidden that this would be said to them.
True disbelief after faith occurs in apostates, and this was mentioned regarding the condition of the Jews in verse 86.
And there is “legal” disbelief (kufr hukmi) in innovators and other corruptors, so both types are included.
[107] The mercy of Allah means Paradise, and this is a glad tidings for the Hereafter.
[108] In this verse, the truthfulness of the Messenger is stated, showing that Allah has sent the Messenger to resolve disputes.
“(Injustice)”—what is meant is the negation of Allah doing injustice to others; it does not mean that when people commit injustice, Allah did not will it—rather, this is the belief of the Mu‘tazilites.
[109] After mentioning the truthfulness of the Messenger, the verse affirms the oneness of Allah—that absolute authority and power belong only to Allah—and it refutes associating partners with Him in His control over affairs.
[110] This is an encouragement for calling others (to goodness) and relates to verse 104.
The distinction of this ummah (community) is due to its commitment to inviting others.
In the word “ukhrijat” (brought forth), it is indicated that the caller to truth should be visible and known among the people; another point is that calling others requires stepping forward and taking action.
“And you believe in Allah”—after inviting others, the point of faith here is to have certainty in Allah’s help, and also that, through inviting others, one attains complete faith.
Benefit: From this verse, two types of people of knowledge are mentioned, and ten characteristics and states of each were previously explained.
In this verse, one characteristic of each group is mentioned.
