يَوْمَ تَجِدُ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ مَا عَمِلَتْ مِنْ خَيْرٍ مُحْضَرًا وَمَا عَمِلَتْ مِنْ سُوءٍ تَوَدُّ لَوْ أَنَّ بَيْنَهَا وَبَيْنَهُ أَمَدًا بَعِيدًا وَيُحَذِّرُكُمُ اللَّهُ نَفْسَهُ وَاللَّهُ رَءُوفٌ بِالْعِبَادِ ﴿۳۰﴾ قُلْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ اللَّهَ فَاتَّبِعُونِي يُحْبِبْكُمُ اللَّهُ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ ﴿۳۱﴾ قُلْ أَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَالرَّسُولَ فَإِنْ تَوَلَّوْا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ الْكَافِرِينَ ﴿۳۲﴾
﴾30﴿ Yawma tajidu kullu nafsim maa'amilat min khairim muhdaranw wa maa 'amilat min sooo'in tawaddu law anna bainahaa wa bainahooo amadam ba'eedaa; wa yuhazzirukumul laahu nafsah; wallaahu ra'oofum bil'ibaad
﴾31﴿ Qul in kuntum tuhibboonal laaha fattabi' oonee yuhbibkumul laahu wa yaghfir lakum zunoobakum; wallaahu Ghafoorur Raheem
﴾32﴿ Qul atee'ul laaha war Rasoola fa in tawallaw fa innal laaha laa yuhibbul kaafireen
﴾30﴿ The Day when every soul will find whatever good it has done present before it, and whatever evil it has done—it will wish that there were a great distance between itself and that (evil). And Allah warns you about Himself, and Allah is Most Kind to His servants.
﴾31﴿ Say: If you love Allah, then follow me, so that Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
﴾32﴿ Say: Obey Allah and the Messenger. But if you turn away, then surely Allah does not love the disbelievers.
[30] In this verse, there is a warning of the Hereafter for those who befriend the disbelievers. The phrase "of good" and "of evil" refers to the severing of ties with disbelievers as good, and befriending them as evil—it also includes all types of good and evil. The pronouns "between it and him" refer to the soul, and the pronoun "him" refers either to the evil or to the Day. The phrase “Allah warns you about Himself” in the previous verse was related to avoiding friendship with disbelievers, while here the warning pertains to righteous deeds.
[31] In this verse, there is encouragement to attain the love of Allah through following the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace). Two benefits of following the Prophet are mentioned: the love of Allah and the forgiveness of sins. This verse refutes those who claim to love Allah but act contrary to the way of the Prophet—such people are ignorant elders and false mystics. It also refutes those who seek reward from Allah but whose actions oppose the Prophet’s path, such as deviant scholars and the unlearned. True love for Allah and hope for His reward are only valid through the path of the Prophet. This is a refutation of those who seek nearness to Allah through ways of shirk and innovation, while the true means to Allah is the way of the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace).
Note: “Ittibaʿ” (following) refers to imitating someone’s actions and way, while “ṭāʿah” (obedience) refers to accepting and following their words.
[32] In this verse, it is indicated that turning away from obedience to Allah and His Messenger amounts to a form of denial and treating the command lightly, which is disbelief (kufr).
